Salah Ammo & Peter Gabis

Due to the situation in his home country Syria, bouzouk player Salah Ammo has lived in Vienna, Austria as a refugee since 2013. Soon after arriving he met Austrian percussionist Peter Gabis and later that year they formed a duo.  Salah’s comprehensive experience with oriental music combined with Peter’s background in jazz, world music and overtone-singing creates a sound that is entirely new.  Their compositions, which are based on Kurdish and Arabic texts, provide a space for the musicians’ unique musical communication, bringing two cultures together to form a common musical soul. In 2014 the duo was in the finals of the Austrian World Music Award and their CD,  Assi – A story of a Syrian River, was nominated for the renowned “Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik“. Recent performance highlights include a show in front of 50,000 people at the Voices for Refugees Festival at Heldenplatz in Vienna.

Salah Ammo describes his experience arriving in Austria as a refugee. At the end of his talk he is joined by Peter Gabis to perform his composition "Good Morning, Freedom".
